1 Doc Brown’s Time Machine
And the coolest car of the 80’s is, unsurprisingly, Doctor Emit Brown’s DeLorean DMC-12 from the Back to the Future franchise. This car not only looked amazing, it could travel through time, had a fusion reactor attached to the top and could fly!
This almost didn’t come to be though as a DeLorean wasn’t film creator, Robert Zemeckis’, first choice. Originally the time machine was to be a laser device set in a room, then it was changed to a device in a fridge that needed to be transported to an atomic bomb test site, before Zemeckis finally settled on the idea of a car. The DeLorean was picked for its futuristic look and characteristic gull-wing doors.
The original DeLorean time-machine design was by Andrew Probert and Ron Cobb. Parts from three 1981 DeLoreans were used to construct the first car and a further five DeLoreans were used throughout the filming of the trilogy as well as one ‘interior’ car and one fibreglass copy used for aerial work. In the off-road scenes in the third film, a modified-for-off-road VW Beetle frame was fitted to the DeLorean with the whitewall tires and baby moon hubcaps.
